History of the Internet |
|
The Internet was started in the 70's to enable DOD computers and researchers at universities to work together. It also ensured that no nuclear strike could take out all DOD computing power by making that computing power distributed. In 1981 there were 213 computers connected to the Internet. In 1989, the World Wide Web (WWW) was developed by physicists at CERN (the European Laboratory for Particle Physics) in Switzerland. Around 1993 the Internet was expanded to allow private companies and individuals to be on it. Also, around 1993, Network Solutions took over the job of registering commercial sites with the .com domain name. They are also referred to as the NIC or InterNIC. |
